Karsten obtains the water that it consumes from the river Testo, in Blumenau, using, treating and returning it cleaner than when it was taken. The company itself treats the water for human consumption and for the manufacturing process. The 190 m³/h of effluents are treated by the biological, physical-chemical system, obtaining an efficiency of approximately 100% in the removal of the pollution.
As proof of its pioneering spirit in the rational use of water, Karsten was the first textile company in Santa Catarina to install an Effluent Treatment Station using a biological system, in 1988.
With a capacity for 210m³/h requiring an investment of approximately 2.5 million dollars. In the biological cleaning process the microorganisms are acclimatized to remove the organic material from the effluent.
The treatment of effluents is being constantly improved. As an example of this evolution we can mention the unprecedented project developed by the first employees of Karsten for drying industrial mud, reducing from 270 to 60 tons a month the depositing of this residue in the industrial landfill.
